He began translating while working at the University of Bergen, where colleagues frequently asked him to brush up or translate articles for publication in academic journals. He has taught English at language schools in Germany and Norway, was a member of Bergen Council’s grants allocation committee for performing arts projects, and a member of the board of the Wittgenstein Archives. He worked for several years as a freelance theatre director in Germany, Belgium and Norway. From 1991 to 2001 he lived in Bergen, Norway, where for seven years he worked at the Wittgenstein Archives, a research project at the University of Bergen.
